The fast bowler Expected to Feature a Significant Contribution in Ashes Series

Pat Cummins bowling

The Australian skipper has claimed 309 Test scalps in 71 Test matches with an average of 22.10.

The Australian chief selector George Bailey has confirmed that pace spearhead Cummins will have a crucial role in the forthcoming historic rivalry.

Speculation had been growing that Cummins might be unavailable due to a ongoing back issue that was still troubling him.

Initial reports from team management suggested no final decision had been made regarding his involvement, with the five-Test series kicking off on November 21 in Perth.

He revealed that his recovery is on track and felt positive about the likelihood of participating.

"We're aware that the window is narrowing and there are permutations around that, not just the back issue, but other factors as well," he commented.

"It's positive. There's strong faith that he will feature a significant role. Hopefully from the opening match. Otherwise, we'll reassess."

Injury History

Cummins was ruled out Australia's limited-overs series against New Zealand and India in the previous weeks after scans revealed a lower back issue.

Previous incidents include of back injuries, with recurrences in 2012-13, 2013-14 and 2015-16 forcing him out of three Australian summers in a limited period.

The bowler mentioned he would be bold in recovery efforts in his recovery plan to make the squad for the contest.

The selector indicated that he did not know if he had started his bowling workouts as part of his rehabilitation but conceded it was "getting tight" for him to be fit for the initial match.

Contingency Plans

If he's unavailable, former captain Steve Smith will lead the side.

The talented all-rounder was withdrawn recently from the ODI lineup for their limited-overs matches against India as a preventive step because of discomfort in his torso.

The selector characterized it as a "small issue and stated that Green will play in the state-level matches, so will be "well-prepared to resume bowling."

"We put so much time has gone into creating the schedule for him to participate for the opening match as an batting and bowling option," he elaborated.

"His involvement was limited to the first two ODIs regardless. How he handles the cricket bat in white-ball cricket, should it hinder progress for another day, we just made the decision to take a cautious route."
