The Compassion of People We Don't Know: The Way a Person I Had Just Met Supported Me Obtain the Role That Transformed My Existence

In the closing decade of the 80s, I set out on a low-cost journey to the European continent with a companion. Since my travel mate was considering enrolling in graduate studies in New York, we had arranged a two-week stay there en route to London.

We arrived at the student accommodation, a large ten-floor structure on the UWS called International House. After dropping our bags, we made our way to the dining hall, where we got some food, sat down, and began chatting with other diners.

Sitting next to me was an individual of Iraqi origin enrolled in an engineering program at a prestigious New York university. He inquired what I my profession was, and I told him that I had just graduated with a science degree and had been performing experiments using an electron microscope.

He pointed out that there was an microscopy facility at Columbia University – right next door to the engineering faculty, which was why he was aware of it. He suggested that I consider applying for a role with them. I laughed it off, explaining that I was heading off to Europe and, additionally, I didn’t have a US visa.

The following day I toured the city, going back to the cafeteria that after dark. The Iraqi student walked over to me and let me know that he had set up a meeting for me with the leader of the research team at Columbia. Since he had taken the effort, I went to the meeting – but straight off informed my interviewer that I didn’t have a visa, so I was likely not a suitable candidate.

Reflecting the city's spirit – a city where opportunities abound – she said: “We'll handle it. How soon can you begin?” I missed my plane to London.

I held that position for three years. One of the benefits was that I was granted complimentary education at Columbia, and I seized the chance to complete a graduate degree in global studies.

We didn't cross paths after that and I don’t even know his name, but his incredible act of kindness transformed my future in multiple respects. I would never have had the courage or nerve to reach out at an prestigious college and seek a position. Moreover, I had consistently hoped to study abroad, but lacked the financial means without that educational benefit.

Perhaps most importantly, that role at the university paved the way for a role in Europe where I got to know my handsome spouse from France, with whom I now have four amazing children. That encounter altered everything. That kind stranger changed my trajectory in life, and I’m eternally thankful.
