Meteorological devices containing numerous packages of cigarettes have caused flight disruptions in Lithuania, as Vilnius Airport was forced to close for several hours when multiple of them drifted across the country's airspace.
Aviation Problems
The operational halt led to the cancellation of 30 flights affecting thousands of passengers, with airport representatives alerting that further disruptions were possible throughout Monday.
Border Security Response
Border security stated that multiple atmospheric balloons were observed crossing into Lithuania from neighboring Belarus, with a pair of them ending up precisely above the airport's airspace.
Up to 14 of the atmospheric instruments sent during the weekend floated over the Vilnius area, which is situated near Lithuania's primary metropolis and near the Belarusian boundary.
Illegal Goods Seizure
No fewer than 11 balloons carrying numerous containers of contraband smoking materials have now been retrieved, though this number could rise, according to border security officials.
Regional Smuggling Pattern
Although causing problems, officials emphasized that "Weather devices carrying illegal goods - tobacco products originating in Belarus - are common occurrences in the Baltic region and Poland."
To date in the current year, numerous meteorological balloons have been observed infiltrating Lithuania from Belarus, while nearly a thousand were noted during the prior year.
Neighboring Country Impact
Simultaneously, the north-eastern Polish territory, which also borders Belarus, has registered in excess of one hundred incidents in which smuggled items were delivered from its neighbor using the weather devices.
Smuggling Techniques
Regarding inquiries concerning why criminals use a technique that proves especially affected by weather conditions rather than more controllable drones, representatives elaborated that "Atmospheric equipment are simple mechanisms used by illegal traders - they are more economical than drones for transporting cigarettes from Belarus."
Border Protection Aims
Officials added that "The goal of law enforcement is to confiscate the maximum possible volumes of smuggled items and to detain organisers and participants so that such operations become not financially viable and present no risk to commercial air travel."
European Tensions
Such border infiltrations occur during a time of increased concerns in Europe following numerous drone incursions that have created aviation problems across the continent.
Similar occurrences in neighboring countries have led European authorities to fast-track conversations about strengthening air defences throughout European airspace.
